All work is due Tuesday, November 29th.
Be prepared to present your invention to the class.
Model of my Invention
You are required to make either a working full-size prototype or a small model of your invention. Students inventing a new process will want to develop an outline for the new process. Rube Goldberg inventions need to be demonstrated (or viewed) during the class presentation. Rube Goldberg inventions can be recorded to be shown in class. Rube Goldberg inventions also include a flowchart. Be sure to document all work in your logbook.
Backboard Display
An attractive backboard display is very important. You will want people to be attracted to your invention. A good promotion plan would include pictures on how the product would be useful as well as steps that explain how to use the invention. Remember, an inventor has to sell people on her or his product or process.
You will make a three-sided display for your project. The information on your backboard should be colorful and computer-generated. Your information should fill the backboard and be arranged in a logical order. Sample backboards will be shown in class.
The backboard display should include:
-
The name of the invention
-
A diagram (drawn with pencil or computer-generated) of the invention with labels explaining its operation.
-
The purpose of the invention
-
Photos of the invention (either while the invention is constructed or in use)
-
Optional: Graphs, pictures, magazine and newspaper clippings that relate to your invention. Jingle, song, or poem about your invention. Results of testing your invention.
Classroom Presentation
All work including the model and the log is due Wednesday, November 29th. Presentations will be given Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday . (November 29, 30, and December 1st) The Invention grade will be averaged in the 2nd quarter grading period.
Include the following in your presentation:
-
The name of your invention
-
The purpose of your invention and how it works
-
How you thought of this invention (What need does it fill?)
-
Answer any questions from the class.
Log Book pages
LOG BOOK INFORMATION Log Book: (for an invention)
Your log is a record of all the work you have done on your project. Complete all log pages. Add extra pages if needed. Remember: If your work is not recorded, it does not exist!
Log Book – Your Inventor’s Log Book will consist of the following pages (in this order).
Rube Goldberg : Please follow the pages for the Invention or the Rube Goldberg project below.
Invention
1.Intent to Invent form – Should contain parent and teacher’s signatures.
2. Brainstorming – Write and draw pictures for 3 different ideas
3. My Chosen Idea – Describe your idea; sketch your idea in pencil
4.Research on my Invention – Write about at least 3 places you checked to make sure your invention is original. (Include websites, magazines, stores you looked at, etc.)
5. Directions on How I Made my Invention – Explain how to make your invention. Include any ideas, thoughts, or results of your work on your invention.
6.Using my Invention – Include information on how to use your invention
7. Illustration of my invention – Include drawings at various stages. Include changes to your original idea. Make a final drawing with the parts labeled. (The final drawing should be a neat representation of your invention.)
-
Testing my Invention- Explain how you tested your invention; What people who tested it said about your invention; how many times you tested your invention, etc. (Include as much information about your testing as possible!)
-
Naming my Invention- Include your brainstorming of names; your chosen name; why you decide on this name
-
Cost of Buying/Making my Invention – List materials and costs
-
The Project Summary - The Summary sheet is very important! Retype (or copy) these questions. Answer in complete sentences. Give/repeat all the info from your logbook sheets. This page is to be typed!
-
What problem do you wish to solve? (Examples: I don’t have time to mop floors; I always lose my pens.)
-
Name one solution to this problem. Name a drawback to this solution. (What needs to be improved?) (Examples: I can use a mop that has the cleaner and mop all in one, but my floors don’t seem clean enough; I can put my pens in a carrying case, but if I lose my carry case, I lose all my pens!)
-
What did you invent to solve the problem you identified?
-
What books, journals, websites, or other resources did you consult? How did they help you to develop your invention?
-
What materials did you use for your invention?
-
About how much does your invention cost?
-
Name one problem you encountered with your invention. How did you solve this problem?
-
Describe how you tested your invention. Include any data from your tests.
Rube Goldberg Log – Only ONE booklet needed per group, but EACH member needs to hand in his/her own answers to the Project Summary!
1. Intent to Invent form – Should contain parent and teacher’s signatures.
2. Brainstorming – Write and draw pictures for 3 different ideas
3. My Chosen Idea – Describe your idea; sketch your idea in pencil
4. Materials Used to Make my Invention: List the materials used in the Rube Goldberg invention.
5. Directions on How I Made my Invention – Explain how to make your invention. Include any ideas, thoughts, or results of your work on your invention.
6. Illustration of my invention – Make a final drawing with the parts labeled. (The final drawing should be a neat representation of your invention.)
7. Testing my Invention- Explain how you tested your invention; it is important to test your Rube Goldberg invention a few times! (Include as much information about your testing as possible!)
8. Naming my Invention- Include your brainstorming of names; your chosen name; why you decide on this name
-
Record of Work Done by each Member - If two students worked together on the project– (see the page below)
10. Project Summary – Each member of the Rube Goldberg team must complete his/her own Project Summary Sheet.
The Summary sheet is very important! Retype (or copy) these questions. Answer in complete sentences. Give /repeat all the info from your logbook sheets. This page is to be typed!
1. What problem do you wish to solve?
2. What materials were used for this invention?
3. Name one problem you encountered while working on your invention. How did you solve this problem?
4. Describe how you tested your invention. Include any data from your tests.
5. Using words, write down each step of the Rube Goldberg invention.
